Madrid seeks improved home form in Spanish title race

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Real Madrid's tally of nine away wins at this stage of the Spanish season is the best in its history.

However, poor form at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium has left Fabio Capello's team in third place in the standings, five points behind leader FC Barcelona with 10 games remaining. Madrid, which has only six home wins, can't afford another slip-up on Sunday when it hosts No. 13 Osasuna.

That could leave the team facing another season without a major trophy, extending the powerhouse's worst spell since the late 1940s and early 1950s.

"We have a psychological problem at the Bernabeu," Madrid sports director Predrag Mijatovic said. "Three years without a title weigh heavily, the fans become demanding and there's a lack of confidence."

David Beckham is aiming to play after missing three games with a sprained right knee ligament.

Liverpool, the 2005 champion, won the first leg 2-1 in Spain two weeks ago. With the aggregate score of the total-goals series tied, Liverpool advanced on away goals.

Eidur Gudjohnsen scored in the 75th minute for Barcelona.

Chelsea, AS Roma and Valencia also advanced to the quarterfinals.

"It gives us great confidence, going through against the best side in Europe over two legs," Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said.

Valencia was held to a 0-0 tie by visiting Internazionale following a 2-2 tie in Milan in the first leg, and the Spanish team advanced on away goals.
